I haven't done an anonymous comment meme in a while, but it's a grey Monday! So draw up a chair, have a cup of tea, and get things off your chest! Serious, silly, inconsequential or important... Say what you like! Just remember to choose the "anonymous" option! :) And feel free to get into discussions with each other, too. Nothing like a bit of gossip on a dull day!

If you could live anywhere else in the world, where?

This is a really good question! I am not sure. There are a lot of places I would like to try living. At the moment, what I really want is to be living somewhere I have a BONAFIDE ACADEMIC JOB. That would ideally be somewhere with some culture and history and things to do, but I'm not picky at this point. But in broader terms... I used to be unsure that I'd like to live in London again, but I think now I would quite like to, if I could afford to live in a reasonable sort of way. I would really like to live in Manchester, because it's such a dynamic city. Further afield, I love Chicago! I think I might even be willing to brave its winters. It's a very graceful and homey sort of city all at once, and having explored the suburbs a bit I can totally see myself living in one of the hipsterish bits of Chicago. If my Spanish were better, I would live in Spain. Hell, I'd give living in Spain a whirl even without better Spanish! It is a country I find endlessly fascinating. And part of me always longs for the Middle East, even if the Middle East I remember has mostly gone...

How about you?

I really, really, really love these anonymous memes.

I also really, really, really love reading your entries. They're always so well-written and well-constructed, and (more often than not) flat-out inspirational. So, even though I still don't comment as often as I should (though I think I'm getting ever-so-slightly better), a sincere thank you for continuing to let me read them. :)

With universities facing budget cuts, what will you do if you don't get a bona fide academic job? What's your next favourite choice of career, and will you continue to research your own projects regardless?

I honestly do not know. I think about this sometimes, and the idea of not working in academia actually horrifies me. It's hard to express the extent to which I am emotionally invested in what I am doing. I would like to keep working on my own research; the extent to which that would be possible outside of a university context, however, is debatable. I am not really interested in dabbling in research, and things move on so quickly in my field.

I find teaching very rewarding, so that could be an option, and I might also find working in government worthwhile and intellectually stimulating - the best temping job I ever had was at the Home Office, where I had a job that required lots of multitasking and independent thought.
